O2 stifling mobile net by ending unlimited data

O2's guru James looking pissed that his boss has made his job a lot harder

We like to keep things upbeat here at The Processor, however I am not going to let this one slide. As momentum gathered for the launch of the new iPhone 4 on the 24th of June, I excitedly signed up to be kept informed of the latest developments from my carrier O2, all of which I hoped would be positive. And then I get this email, linking off to their site to tell me that they were getting rid of ‘unlimited’ data plans!

I could not believe it. That was the ONLY good thing about being on O2, and they just got rid of it! I know that in the grand scheme of things, like child poverty and war, it’s not the biggest of problems to face mankind. But really, in this day and age of a connected world I could not believe that O2 would take such a retrograde step.

Punishing the many, because of a few douchebags.

O2 have said that “just 1% of smartphone users – are using 36% of its total mobile data traffic, and that they needed to be encouraged to change their behaviour.” Great, it’s like just being back at school where one asshole downloads a tonne of porn onto his Macintosh Performa 6320e and the whole computing class is put in detention; but worse because we have to pay at least £30 for the privilege each month.

O2 well done, you have lost yourself a customer.

Apple Unvails New iPad

The Apple iPad launched by Steve Jobs in the foreground

With years of speculation mounting, the rumours and hype have finally proved true. Apple have just launched, the iPad.

Seen by The Creator himself as “the most important thing” he’s ever done. The iPad was launched to a frenzied reception in the Yerba Buena Center, San Francisco today.

The device which has been penned as the saviour of digital publishing, is much like a larger iPhone but has it’s own distinctive styling and has the following specs:

9.7″ IPS screen
1 GHz Apple A4 processor
16GB – 64BG Flash HD
0.5″ thin
1.5 pounds

However, were you like us a bit let down by the iPad launch? Were you expecting something else, here at The Processor we can’t really say we are inspired by the technology as it seems like a bigger, glorified iPhone/Pod. What could be interesting is Apple’s monopoly on the ‘iBook’ market. Something else like the music industry they can control!?

Let’s hear your opinions!!

Want to do a poo at Paul’s?

Monday, January 18th, 2010

It happens to everyone, you head up town for a day of retail therapy and just as you are browsing your favourite bookshop, your bowels go into eject mode with nowhere near that you know of to potty. Well, we have found the application to help, it’s discreetly called SitOrSquat.

Website, iPhone app and life-saver, this handy creation will enable users to find the nearest place to do the toilet on their phones (not literally on their phones, that would be disgusting)! Have a browse online or download the app onto your phone, I am sure you will find it entertaining to see how various toilets have been rated.

Jesus makes a quick call to pops.

Everyone knows the iphone has a pretty comprehensive range of features, but until now, there was one glaring omission – talking to God (the big bearded dude on high, not His Jobsness).

The answer to what must surely have been many a prayer has manifested itself in the shape of a miraculous new app from the Archdiocese of Boston’s television show, CatholicTV. Devout techies can take advantage of a divine range of features including reflections, Mass celebrations and recitations of the rosary. (via our favourite Boston-based business journal, the Boston Business Journal)

In the unlikely event that you ever bore of the app and are yearning for just a little more religous guilt (or just want an excuse not to use a condom), why not check out the hotly anticipated Answers 4 Catholics app, when it’s released next month. Meanwhile, cast your eye over the selection on this thread. Who ever said the church was behind the times.

iphone goes Orange

Orange iphone

O2′s stranglehold on designers and media types across the UK will soon come to an end, thanks to the expiration of it’s exclusive deal to provide Apple’s iPhone. Rival Orange is muscling in on the action, and in a brief statement released this morning announced that it would be offering app-hungry consumers a chance to get a piece of Britain’s coolest brand later this year.

“Orange UK and Apple have reached an agreement to bring iPhone 3G and 3GS to Orange UK customers later this year,” it said. “Orange, which has the largest 3G network covering more people in the UK than any other operator, will sell iPhone in all Orange direct channels including Orange shops, the Orange webshop and Orange telesales channels, as well as selected high street partners.”

Details are scarce, with no exact dates or pricing plans confirmed. It’ll be interesting to see if 02′s arguably inflated tarriffs are undercut though, and the stage could be set for a juicy pre-Christmas price war. If Orange’s proposed merger with the UK arm of T-Mobile goes through, the iPhone will be available to a rather hefty customer base of more than 49 million across the UK.

Screenshots from the Cosmic Ordering App

Do like Noel Edmonds? Do you ever wish you had an iPhone application that combined a to-do list and a big picture of Noel Edmonds FACE? Well look no further, it’s yours from the App Store for a mere one hundred and nineteen British pennies! It is essentially a glorified to do list, and we here at The Processor can’t live without it. Number one interestingly on my ‘Cosmic Order’ is to watch more Deal or No Deal, how did that get there?

Spotify for iPhone released. Music industry breathes sigh of relief.

Monday, August 31st, 2009

According to the Spotify blog, it seems like Apple have finally de-clenched their assholes and allowed a competitor to have a good music app on the store. This is big news as it opens up what control the user has over their iPhone when it comes to music, due to the fact the Spotify app will allow subscribers (of it’s premium account) to download albums and store them on their phone.

All we need now is faith from the music industry in the service and a better share of profits for bands.

Nokia enters netbook market

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

With all the hype surrounding the entrance of Apple into the netbook market, we feel that there should be a bit of time for dealing with the fact that Nokia, the worlds biggest moblie phone manufacturer, entering into the personal computing market with this stylish new netbook.

The specs are not too bad:

Weight: 1.25kg
Connectivity: WiFi and high-speed mobile broadband (as from the name 3G and HSDPA)
Processor: Intel Atom
Body: Aluminum (more than 2cm thick)
Battery life: 12 hrs
Screen: 10.1 in
OS: Windows (version not yet revealed)
Other: HD video out, assisted-GPS, front facing camera, blue-tooth and SD card reader

Good to see a tad more competition in this market, and it will be refreshing to see what a mobile phone maker can bring to these devices. Still awaiting more on price and contracts, will keep you eager beavers posted as and when.
